Sleep Sound 03:23
Sleep sound where you lay Sleep sound where you lay Entangle me in verses of poetry Avert my gaze from the darkest of darkest days There's nothing more to say Sleep sound where you lay Sing us songs of love And we'll listen to old 45s Sing us songs of peace And we'll dance and we'll sing through the night If tomorrow comes We'll thank God that we're all still alive If tomorrow comes Sleep sound where you lay Sleep sound where you lay They're winding down the clocks in the market towns They're calling time in the pubs on the coastal line Here comes the final day So sleep sound where you lay Sing us songs of love And we'll listen to old 45s Sing us songs of peace And we'll dance and we'll sing through the night If tomorrow comes We'll thank God that we're all still alive If tomorrow comes Sleep sound where you lay Sleep sound where you lay

Family Man 04:46
Riding through the streets of York, Stepping on the cracks we used to know. We'll wait up til all the hours, Rolling now the way we used to roll. I tingle and I'm tangled now, I'm wrapped in all the silver and the gold. I'll work it out in time I know, If time is something I can still afford. I'm a family man now, It could be all I know. I'm a family man now, I'll be home before you know. Tell me all the songs you love, And dress up like you're trying to catch my eye. We'll forget the world for now, Let this things wash over us a while. My memory's like a sieve, It captures all the residue and grime. But you're lighting up the present, With your incandescent phosphor-coated smile. I'm a family man now, It could be all I know. I'm a family man now, Pretty soon I'm coming home. I'd wait all day just to hold you. I'd wait all day for your arms.

I've been down for seven days without my fields or songs of praise. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) Snuffling here in bed I lie with the TV as my only guide. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways again) Maybe it's this blasted tincture but I see no real distinction, (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) Between the bombs and the mass infection and the adverts selling loan protection. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) And the wind howls so hard... And the rain pounds at my door... I'm longing for the good old days when Brillo scrubbed our wrongs away. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) And ignorance was pursued with ardour and the sex and lies kept in the larder. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) I think I've found a clear opinion of the best way we can face oblivion. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) It's with your socks pulled up and your braces tight and your lip kept stiff and your humour dry. (Rolling sideways, rolling sideways) And the wind howls so hard... And the rain pounds at my door... And where is she, in our hour of need? Oh Queenie won't you comfort me? So we'll gather up our family, gather up our friends, Gather up the ones we think we want to perish with... And the wind howls so hard... And the rain pounds at my door... And where is she, in our hour of need? Oh Queenie won't you comfort me?

Cotton Wool 03:51
The bird out on the morning wire, The frost out on the lane, The faded light of cotton wool, That is where I've been Where starlings dance a centrifuge, Of love and lust and spring, Tumbling like a Rubik's cube, That is where I've been. Come on let me show you, How the fields will mould you, Any shape you want to... With every stride a slow release, Of fears and fails and needs. The first one feeds the second one, The third one brings me here. Come on let me show you, How the fields will mould you, Any shape you want to be. Come by saint or sinner, Let the birds unpin you, Throw your threads out on the breeze. Come on let me show you, How the fields will mould you, Any shape you want to be. Come by saint or sinner, Let the birds unpin you, Throw your threads out on the breeze. Let the blackbird fly you, Somewhere fresh I'll bet you, Swap the stale air you breathe. Come by here my lover, It's a mess I'll grant you, Throw your threads out on the breeze. Just before the fighting starts, Just before we name, The reasons we must be apart, That is where I'll stay.

Pick my feet up, Dust myself down, Look me in the eye. This reflection, On close inspection, Needs kicking into line. It's the northern temper, Blames the weather, For all our wrongs and woes. I've been guilty, Of glass half empty, When my cup overflows. I saw it on the mountain, I saw it on the shore, I saw it in the evergreen I'd never seen before. I saw it in the starlight, I saw it in the way, The moon ensnares the earth then gently pulls rolls tide away. I saw it in the seasons, the shift from red to green. I saw it in the fields, the colours overpowering me. I saw you on the mountain, I saw you on the shore, I saw you on the hillside, you took my hand in yours. It's too tempting, To slip, slip, slide into, Grey and gloom and bland, Count my fortunes, On fingers and thumbs, Stars and grains of sand. I saw it on the mountain, I saw it on the shore, I saw it in the sunlight I'd never seen before. I saw it in the birds returning on the April breeze. I saw it in the hedgerows all full of summer's needs. I saw it in the patchwork across the country's moors. I saw it in the lovers parting at the station door. I felt the rain inside me, the wind blow round my head, You pulled the curtains saying, "I think we'll stay in bed". I let the news surround me, I let the bastards win, I let the past abide although there's nothing I'd re-spin. I saw you on the mountain, I saw you on the shore, I saw you on the hillside, you took my hand in yours. And now my eyes keep wandering, hear sounds I've never heard, You made me see the joy in naming all the garden birds. I see the bombs exploding, the fighters in the sky, You say just grab the moment, you know we could die tonight. I see the world on fire, a sordid, sullied land, You made me count the shells we'd scattered on the east coast sands. I'll watch the sun exploding, I'll watch the stars collide, I'll watch the trees uprooting, I'll watch it burn tonight. I saw you on the mountain, I saw you on the shore, I saw you on the hillside, you took my hand in yours.

(With a nod to Philip Larkin) As this day ends all swaddled in dark cloud, I turn to you the pivot I move round. Gladden my heart and wash away my sin. Your toothless smile will let my God back in. In times when things grow strange Just know that we won't change As this day ends...all broken, battered, bruised, With every hour a wave of more bad news. I thank my stars I'm driving home to you, My three-in-one all snuggled in one room. In times when things grow strange Just know that we won't change In times when nothing stands Your hands are in our hands As this day ends...and growing's sadness looms, With knowledge gained a happiness you'll lose. Yes there is bad in every single soul, But at least for now no need for you to know. In times when things grow strange Just know that we won't change In times when nothing stands Your hands are in our hands As this day ends all swaddled in dark clouds, I turn to you the pivot I move round. Lift up your arms and turn to me your eyes, Yes something's changed and the world is twice the size. In times when things grow strange Just know that we won't change In times when nothing stands Your hands are in our hands

The crumbling road of the wrong from the right. A feeling that we're losing the fight. All I will promise you is the road never lies, All I will ask of you is be there when I die. You're crying now most every day, I'll do my best to keep out of the way. All I will promise you is the road never lies, All I will ask of you is be there when I die. There'll be blood on your hands you know by the end of your life, If you fight til the final blow, if you fight for what's right. All I will promise you is the road never lies, All I will ask of you is be there when I die. The lane is long and straight. Would you care to walk my way? We're done with bends and curves. We've learned all we can learn.

I took the back stairs to the door where I joined in the crowd, Without a "why?" or a "where?" well we burned that place down. With a gun in my arm we brought down the law, I guess it just slipped my mind to ask "well what's it all for?". Please take me back, back to the green, Please take me back where my baby still sleeps. There is blood in my eyes and glass in my soul, Now I'm fighting for peace, a contradiction I'm told. I'm in love with our land but I'm burning it down, So we can start from the start once this confusion dies down. Please take me back, back to the green, Please take me back where my baby still sleeps. The struggle goes on but I'm struggling to breathe, So please take me back where my baby still sleeps. (Our comrades let us down) So I'm working for the man. (Money let us down) So I'm turning to the land. (Nature let us down) So it's the good Lord or the booze. (What's a man to do?) Won't you please take me back, back to the green, Please take me back where my baby still sleeps. The struggle goes on but I'm struggling to breathe, So please take me back where my baby still sleeps. When they ask what I did I know just how I'll respond, "I believed in belief, in an age when there's none". And it's just slipped my mind exactly what it's all for, Is the fighting enough if your aim isn't sure. (Our comrades let us down) So I'm working for the man. (Money let us down) So I'm turning to the land. (Nature let us down) So it's the good Lord or the booze. (What's a man to do?) All I need is some land and a girl as my wife, Maybe we'll have a child, yes I'll take the simple life. Cos I'm lost and alone and I want to go home. I'm lost and alone and I want to go home. Won't you please take me back, back to the green, Please take me back where my baby still sleeps. The struggle goes on but I'm struggling to breathe, So please take me back where my baby still sleeps.

English Rose, full of blood, I hope it's always understood, That you push me through. Oh you push me through. I'm a fool not to say, That you brighten every day. Yes you push me through, Oh yes you push me through. In my darkness, In the whole mess, You keep a tiny light in the bay. You're the light, You're the light, You're the lighter side of life. English Rose, full of fire, When you're sparkling I can't tire. Yes you push me through, Oh you push me through. Don't be fooled by these charms, I'm a child here in your arms, It's the silly things, Oh it's the joy you bring. In my darkness, In the whole mess, You keep a tiny light in the bay. In the long days, We've been losing weight. You're the light, You're the light, You're the lighter side of life. In the darkness, In the whole mess, You keep a tiny light in the bay. In the long days, We've been losing weight. You're the light, You're the light, In the shadows, As the nights close, You keep a flame where I can see. In the long days we've been losing weight. You're the light, You're the light, You're the lighter side of life.

Fast Train 05:19
Bless my soul what's wrong with me, I'm shaking now like a shaking tree, Let's go stateside. Walked the wire and we sold a few but we've, But we've got to do what a man would do, We'll go stateside. On and on and on it rolls. On and on and on it rolls. On a fast train, on a faster train... Bless my soul well this is the life, It's one less hello and it's one more goodbye, Now we're stateside. Take my lover and take my child, And I'll learn to sing in a country style, Now we're stateside. On and on and on it rolls. On and on and on it rolls. On a fast train, on a faster train, on a fast rock rollin' train. I'll call you from LA, I'll say what you want me to say, That we're just about to hit the stars. Yes we're just about to hit the stars. And I'll call you from New York, Yes I'll call you from New York, And if I can make it fail there, I can make it fail anywhere. Bless my soul well I've hit the ground, I'll find myself when I want to be found, It's not stateside. I'm going to stay in a northern town, My friends and my family will anchor me down, It's not a failure, To say I love you. On a fast train, on a faster train, on a fast rock rollin' train. We could make it here, We could make it there, Because we can make it anywhere.

about

So where do we start with this one? Well, it started as it always does...with a pub, six men and an overly frank discussion about economic collapse, fighting in the streets, the end of days, only doing it for the good stuff, the kindness of people, Graceland, Talking Heads, Ray Charles and Van Morrison. It moved on to a chaotic accident ridden 3 month writing and recording phase in our studio The Crypt, journeyed its way through many a live take, picked up a choir, a brass and wood wind section, marched onward with a flag, a jiggle and a sore throat and ended with a group of friends singing that "We can make it anywhere.". It won't change the world but it might change our world.

We'll be writing about making of the album for next couple of weeks and you'll be able read all the posts as we write them here - www.hopeandsocial.com/category/sleep-sound/

If you like this album please please please share it round to others in whatever way you see fit...

about

Hope and Social Leeds

In the tradition of the travelling bands, we guess we’re a bit like a Yorkshire E-Street Band...meets Arcade Fire...meets The Faces…meets Dexys Midnight Runners…meets Prefab Sprout…at a party...in an argument about who gets to have sex with David Bowie. We're not as good at describing ourselves as others are, so...
